From afro-pop group to solo act – a new sound is emerging!
Allow me to cast your memory back to 2007 for a moment. Whether you admitted to being a fan or not, no one could or can deny that the sound of that year’s summer was an infectious house number called, “Destiny”. Soon, the entire country would fall in love with an afro-pop collective by the name of Malaika.
For a time when the afro-pop market was monopolised by pioneering stalwarts, Malaika proved themselves to be a force to be reckoned with – even midst the loss of group member – and the hits just kept on coming. Fast forward six years, and front woman, Tshedi, seeks to repeat history, only this time, as a solo act.
Her new solo album, Victory, showcases the multiplicity of musical skills the artist has. From afro-pop to house, the new album pays homage to her Malaika days, yet is a sound completely her own.
She recently dropped two singles off the album. “This Song” is a love song to music and sees an artist taking care to craft a beautiful work of art which the song in itself, no doubt, is. The house number, “Umsebenzi”, is a romantic tale about the fight for love against all odds, even the odds are just a concerned mother.
Check back soon for all things Tshedi and the new album, Victory.
